PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project was heavily based on the skills I learned while creating my animation for Project 6. Referencing my scripts, I made a lot of changes and added different rotations and movements to match the beat of the background audio track.

Tools Used

  • Python scripting: to easily create all of the moving objects and the expansion properties

  • Maya textures: To create the various gradient effects, I created "ramp" materials

  • Audio track: I imported an audio track into the time slider of maya to match up the animation with the beat

  • Premiere: I did a batch render of all the frames and lined it up again with the audio using Adobe Premiere

12 PRINCIPLES

  1. Anticipation: slow camera pan in the beginning of the animation builds suspense for the viewer as to what will happen next

  2. Secondary action: two different groups of objects interacting with each other and complementing their actions with rotations

  3. Timing: all of the movements of the outside rotating objects was timed along with the beat of the music

  4. Slow-in/Slow-out: the "pulse" of the outside rotating objects was made so that the movement inward was gradual and provided contrast to the fast outward movement to the beat.

  5. Pose-to-pose: to create the fast "pulse"-like movements to the beat, I keyed frames close to each other (one where the objects were close to center cube and the next where they were far away)

Final Comments

A short note regarding the animation is that Maya crashed while I was working on the animation for the music... I had to recreate what progress I had made within a short time and thus, I think I could've done a little better if I had more time. Another note is that I had to do batch renders multiple times because the resolution settings kept resetting. This render is zoomed in a bit too much for my liking (as it doesn't fully show the extent of the animation), but I didn't want to torture my laptop any further by re-rendering the entire thing. Other than that, I enjoyed working on this and enjoyed this class!

Special thanks to my best friend Dana for giving me idea suggestions for this animation.
